William Bailey Maxwell

FORWARD - By Author?

This is a history and record of some of the descendants of William B. Maxwell, one of the great pioneers of the West.  It is a record which has been compiled for many years.  Data has been secured from our own records, in the replies received by personal contact and the replies to numerous letters of inquiry.  The great number of descendants of William B. Maxwell is truly amazing.  In each family we were able to find good and efficient helpers to gather data and collect it.  We have endeavored to contact every member of the clan.  Many did not take the time and make the effort of replying, but I truly believe that as a family they responded very well.

I found disagreement in regard to the spelling of the second name of William.  I found it spelled Baley, Baily and Bailey.  I have used the spelling for the histories as given by the writer.  Baley was the name used in his Patriarchal Blessing.  He was called William or Billy Maxwell by his contemporaries.  Many times he was designated as William B. Maxwell.  Some of the members of the family placed William Bailey Maxwell upon his monument.  This spelling was secured from a Bible record of Martha Jane Mathis Maxwell.  Seemingly, part of the family used Baley and the other Bailey.  However, it is spelled, to me it means the same great individual and I shall call him William B. Maxwell.  Some of his descendants, named for him, use Baley, others insist on Bailey.  It is pronounced the same.

We have used data as furnished us and do not accept responsibility for mistakes of any kind.  We have been as painstaking as humanely possible.  Please forgive us where we have erred.
